Hey hey, Babes!

Let’s talk about skincare. Growing up and throughout high school I did not have much of a battle with acne. For the most part, I was blessed with pretty clear skin. I can remember people telling me how lucky I was, but honestly I didn’t think much of it and took it for granted.

(Note, this is not a sponsored post. This is simply what worked for me!)

how I cleared my skin in my 20s

However, fast forward a few years, and I began to break out. Now, I realize that I am still very blessed because I never had the battle of cystic or severe acne like so many have struggled with. Still, I noticed myself breaking out more and more. Before this, I never bothered with much foundation or cover up. But after looking at a picture I had taken with a friend, it hit me that I had to do something, so I started wearing more makeup.

I know a lot of you face this as well, and it isn’t unusual: the fact that we are breaking out later in life–not just the dreaded middle school years. So I began the search for something to help clear my skin. Honestly, I tried Proactiv. I have a friend who swore by it. She had used it in the past and it worked wonders on her skin. After a month of trying, I didn’t notice a difference except that maybe my skin was smoother. Now just because it didn’t work for me, doesn’t mean it won’t for you. Depending on your skin type, it may be just what you need! There are many great reviews + testimonials. The wonderful thing about Proactiv is that they have a 60 day money back guarantee. So you have nothing to lose!

But recently, I finally found a solution that cleared my skin. I work part-time at a salon and asked our facial tech if she had any recommendations for me. She suggested Cosmedix Elite which is simply a cleanser, and gave me some samples to try. After a few weeks of using it, my skin cleared up and the breakouts noticeably decreased . I felt like everything I had tried was pretty useless, so I was ecstatic when I actually saw results.

I use it each night (the bottle says twice a day, but per our facial tech I only use it once at night and it was enough). In addition to using the cleanser, there are also some important tips worth keeping in mind.

Remove all your makeup before going to bed.

Ladies, I know this can be a pain, but it is really important for good skin health. However, do not use the cleanser to remove makeup. I like to actually use baby oil to remove my mine. After washing my face with a wet wash cloth, I massage the cleanser into my skin then wash it off.

Moisturize afterwards.

The cleanser can be drying (especially if you are already prone to dry skin) so be sure to moisturize after each use. I also use my moisturizer each morning when I get out of the shower. I use Olay Moisturizer. It is less than $10 and at most stores.

Drink plenty of water!

We are mostly water, so don’t underestimate the effects this will have on your skin and overall health.

Eat clean.

Pop, sugars, and anything processed can play a big role in causing acne. Maintaining a balanced diet can really help to clear you skin and prevent breakouts.

It takes a few weeks.

Ok, so I had never heard this before, then I heard it twice in just a few weeks (funny how that works). Your skin problems go beyond what is on the surface. So when trying any new product or protocol, you have to give it time to get under your skin and clear out all the toxins below the surface. In many cases, it is not uncommon to actually break out more when you start something new because it is bringing everything to the surface, often at an accelerated pace. I get it, we all want over-night results. But be patient, and give it time.

Another great thing about this cleanser is that it comes in a decent sized bottle (5 oz). So it will last you a long time as opposed to those tiny bottles that cost a fortune.

I really hope this was able to help you guys. It can be a frustrating task to clear up your skin, especially if you thought those days were long gone. Now that my skin is cleared up, I continue to use foundation, but a lighter alternative. Currently I am using Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue, which is simply a tinted moisturizer. I love this, and it is perfect for summer. It is incredibly light, but also gives decent coverage and helps to balance out skin tones. Since it is essentially a moisturizer, it is not as heavy as your typical foundation, so don’t expect complete coverage. But, with a SPF of 30, it gives extra protection from the sun versus your typical foundation.

I also use Bare Minerals Liquid Foundation. I have not used it much the last few weeks, but I know once Fall + Winter role around I will break it out. It is definitely heavier. (I apply both foundations with my fingers.)

Let me know if you have any questions. I would also love to hear your story and what worked well for you.
